Steaming and Bending Wood to Create a Traditional Victorian Period All Wooden Cherry and Oak Sled

 

Learn Plasticizing wood with a steam retort! You will acquire the knowledge to build and operate one of these steam boxes later at your shop! Enjoy Sixteen lab hours of woodworking experience. Acquire all the necessary skills to safely plasticize (bend) wood safely. You will learn what wood characteristics and species are best for bending wood. This historical period style sled will amaze your friends and colleagues with the bent wood runners and back. Use these skills then to build your own steam retort (box) and bend many items.

 

The following are specific woodworking technologies presented.

  • Create patterns for various sled pieces
  • Identify straight grain cherry lumber to manufacture into wood slats
  • Produce desired thickness and widths of species to plasticize slate
  • Fabricate with a bandsaw slat arcs from patterns
  • Ascertain how to operate a steamer to produce bendable wood
  • Learn techniques in bending wood with a mold and clamps
  • Discover manufacturing techniques for sled ribs

 

Class for AGES 18 and UP or School's Permission

Class # SPI-614

A certificate is awarded upon class completion

Prerequisites:

    SPI-600 or with consent of the instructor.

    NO materials or tools needed.

 

The class takes sixteen hours in eight hour blocks of time. Days and times may be altered depending on the circumstances.

 

FEES:
Tuition $825.00 + Laboratory $200.00 + Materials (solid cherry and oak) $97.00 = $1122.00 and you keep the project.
